《高老头》发表于1834，是巴尔扎克最优秀的作品之一。这部作品在展示社会生活的广度和深度方面，在反映作家世界观的进步性和局限性方面，在表现《人间喜剧》的艺术成就和不足之处方面，都具有代表好处。

小说着重揭露批判的是资本主义世界中人与人之间赤裸裸的金钱关系。小说以1819底到1820初的巴黎为背景，主要写两个平行而又交叉的故事：退休面条商高里奥老头被两个女儿冷落，悲惨地死在伏盖公寓的阁楼上;青年拉斯蒂涅在巴黎社会的腐蚀下不断发生改变，但仍然持续着正义与道德。
